Sitapur is a district in Uttar Pradesh, lying in between Lucknow and Shahjahanpur. Sitapur is named for goddess Sita and located on the banks of River Sarayan. It is a religious place on the name of lord Ram’s wife “Sita”. This city is divided into 6 tehsils, has 9 seats in Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha and four seats in Lok Sabha. Sugarcane is the main crop of Sitapur, hence, having many sugar mills. Awadhi is the main language spoken by the people of Sitapur.

History of Sitapur

Historical background of Sitapur says that the name Sitapur is associated with Lord Ram’s wife Sita. During a pilgrimage they stayed here, after that a king named Vikramaditya set up this city in sake of Sita’s memory. Earlier its name was Chatyapur or Chitiapuras according to Abul Fazal’s Aain-e-Akbari, at the time of the reign of Akbar. At the time of Non-Cooperation Movement in 192 thousands of Sitapur residents took part in the movement. Gandhi ji along with national leaders Maulana Mohammad Ali, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru visited Sitapur in 1925 for cooperation in Freedom Movement in Lalbagh.

Geography of Sitapur

Sitapur is located at 27.57oN and 80.68oE (longitude and latitude), located 100m to 150m above the sea level. There are three rivers flowing in Sitapur they are: Gomti, Chowka, Ghagra, and having tributaries Sarain, Pirai, Gond, Godia, Kevani, Gadia, Ikharia, etc. Temperature in Sitapur varies from 6 degree in winter to 44 degree Celsius in summers. Northern part is located near hills hence receiving more rainfall.

Tourism in Sitapur

Namisharanya - Place for religion and knowledge. It is believed that around 88000 people meditated here. There are 30000 religious places here, some of them are-

Chakratirth – A temple with the belief that Lord Brahma’s shastra i.e. Chakra, fall on this divine land turning that place in the form of round kund and hence its name Chakratirth.

Shyamnathan Temple – Lord Shiva Temple present in old city of Sitapur was built 300-400 years ago.

Hargaon – This town was domiciliated by Harishchandra (famous king of Ayudiya). In the month of Kartik, a mela is organized here.

Other temples are Lalita Devi Temple near which Panch Prayag named pond is located. Vyas gaddi is another tourist spot where Vedas were divided into 4 parts and puranas were created by Maharishi Ved Vyas. This tourist hub is located near Chakratirth. Vaidehi Vatika and Sarojini Vatika have their natural beauty.

How to Reach Sitapur

National highway 24 (from Delhi to Lucknow) passes from Sitapur. Sitapur is 89 km away from the capital Lucknow. Through train Sitapur can be visited by broad gauge train network which connects Gorakhpur to Delhi via Gonad, Burhwal, Lucknow and Hardoi.
